Honku Rules

The rules of honku are pretty simple. Anyone can write one. In fact, if you've got one, feel free to write it in the LampPost Bulletin Board.

Your poem should aim to stick with the traditional 5-7-5 format of Japanese haiku. This means that the first line contains five syllables, the middle line seven and the last line five. Here's an example:

smoking marlboros
listening to howard stern
leaning on your horn

I like this honku because, as in traditional haiku, it uses its 17 syllables to make a simple observation of something in nature that leads to a larger observation about the world as a whole. In this case, we observe the fauna of Clinton Street in its natural habitat. I think it can be interpreted in many different ways, so I'll leave that to the reader.

The only other rule of honku-writing is to clean up after yourself. As you post new honkus throughout the neighborhood, take down old stuff and throw it in the trash. Keep the neighborhood clean. You know better than anyone that there is someone in the neighborhood who is as annoyed about lamppost publishing as you are about honking.
